Located in the Black Hills National Forest Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are enjoyable destinations in South Dakota. They are sperated by just 35 miles. I visited both in October 2002. Wind Cave National Park is near in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The Wind Cave tour schedule can aid in planning your day.

The only way to see the cave is on guided tours provided by the Park Service. The Cave has been outfitted with steel walkways and staircases. Most tours start and end with a elevator ride over 20 stories down into the cave.

Though I didn't have time to take advatage of them, Wind Cave National Park offers 30 miles of hiking trails. Seventy five percent of the park is prairie and the balance is ponderosa pine forest.
